Clever like You (wrote this for a friend)

If only I were clever as you

I’d make words rhyme that weren’t meant to

Each line would be a subtle clue

Into my mystery.

If only I were clever as you

I’d feel colors more than blue

Or at least I’d name blue something new

And rewrite history.

If only I were clever as you

My metaphors would all ring true

A Firework go!… four… three… two…

Boom, the life of me.

If only I were clever as you

I’d hypothesize on life as a Jew

or a Hindu, or at least someone who

escapes uncertainty

In truth, I think uncertainty

is how things are supposed to be

Cause if we knew it all for sure

Faith would become nothing more

than the easy road, the path most taken

Our grip on life, never shaken

Then who would notice the stars and trees

The way things end up how they’re meant to be

All the beauty of the unknown

Helps me know we’re not alone.

A Reason, A Season, A Lifetime?

I find myself surprised again by the roles people assume, and don’t assume, in my life. Sometimes I think I’ve pinned it down - I can see the big picture, where it’s going, what they mean, but I am wrong 95% of the time. Lately I’ve been trying to worry less about this and embrace it more. I can only be me, and let everyone fall where they may.

Walks.

  • boy: Do you think we're almost there?
  • girl: I dunno. Just walk, we'll know it when we get there.
  • boy: I wonder how long it will take.
  • girl: Stop worrying about getting to the end.
  • boy: But isn't that the point? To get to the end?
  • girl: No. It's everything on the way.

Surprise!

My roommate threw me a surprise dinner party tonight for my birthday. 4 of my besties from school came over and celebrated with us. It was a genuine surprise, and it’s hard for me to articulate how much it meant to me. I really thought this birthday would pass without notice.

buongiorno:

Lars and the Real Girl (2007) - filmosophy.
Chad convinced me to finally make time for this film, which I’ve long wanted to see, but kept forgetting to rent.

Just watched this a few nights ago. It gives me hope for real love.

Hm.

I am turning 25 on Friday. This is strange. Interestingly, Hessen just booked a flight to D.C. for next month, and so my natural thought progression was that when I met her, she was 25, and I remember thinking how old that seemed.

My life, for a 25-year-old, is pretty on track. I am still having fun every day, but now that fun sometimes takes the form of laughing at tort cases, sampling champagnes, and gray-hair-hunting. I’ve found a few, by the way. Gray hairs, that is. In general, though, I prefer now to then. I am on my way to professional success; things feel right. This is comforting.

Occasionally, my thoughts turn to marriage, and it seems about time. This is scary. When I say 25 out loud, or in my head for that matter, my brain says “whoa, plenty of time to worry about marriage; now is not the time.” But something else in me disagrees. Perhaps I am just tired of dating and crave a serious long-term relationship in general. But I’ve had such little success with those in the past, it doesn’t seem like the answer. I realize long-term relationships come as a precurser to marriage. This worries me. Maybe I will never make it to the finish line.

Regardless, I’m enjoying the ride more than expected. Things are okay.
